The new BMW 3 Series Coupé : Petrol engines

Petrol engines
(BMW 320i, 325i, 330i, 335i).

How do you improve an engine that has already won the Engine of the Year Award six times? With a Twin Scroll turbocharger, Valvetronic and direct petrol injection for a start.

The improvements are evolutionary as each one of the three technologies has been developed further. What is revolutionary however is how they compliment one another. In the BMW TwinPower Turbo in the BMW 335i they are combined in one complete package. The result: 225 kW (306 hp), 400 Nm across a wide speed range and silky smoothness. And all this at a fuel consumption level of just 9.1 l/100 km.

The straight six-cylinder petrol engine in the 325i and 330i boast a maximum power output of 160 or 190kW (218/258 hp). The 325i completes the zero-to-100 km/h sprint in just 7.1seconds, and the 330i takes a mere 6.2 seconds. Both models are characterised by refined power development plus excellent fuel efficiency.

The BMW 320i's straight four-cylinder engine with direct petrol injection displays stunning efficiency. For optimal combustion, piezo injectors inject the fuel at high pressure into the combustion chamber, which is kept at the ideal temperature. An impressive engine performance of 112 kW (156 hp) delivers thrilling acceleration: from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds and a top speed of 218 km/h. The average fuel consumption in a combined EU test cycle is 8.1 litres over 100 kilometres.
